About — Louisville X Muhammad Ali
“I’m recognized all over the world, but my greatness came and started in Louisville, Kentucky.”
Louisville, Kentucky.
The Derby City. Majestic banks of the Ohio. Home to storied University of Louisville, which has provided the foundation of some the greatest movers and shakers of the last century, while leading the charge in cultivating leaders in social justice.
Why the emphasis on the latter? That’s because of the “Louisville Lip” himself, Muhammad Ali — boxing champion, a galvanizing force in the fight for freedom, justice, and equality, the Greatest there ever was. Born and raised in Louisville as Cassius Clay, Ali’s presence graces the city in the way that Shakespeare’s does Stratford-upon-Avon. It extends to the campus of UofL, connected by its own degrees of greatness.
The Muhammad Ali Institute for Peace and Justice at the UofL today continues Ali’s legacy, and the Muhammad Ali Scholars Program builds leaders. When Muhammad was given the university’s inaugural Grawemeyer Spirit Award, UofL president Ramey said that Ali envisioned, “a world where every individual’s worth is cause for celebration; a world in which inspiration plus action can lead to transformation; a world where each of us can make positive change by discovering our own greatness.”
That greatness is alive. Proud to show the true colors. Proud to wear them.
