About — Iverson x Georgetown
“I played every game like it’s my last.”
Georgetown University.
A groundbreaking institution where presidents, Nobel Prize winners, and Hall of Fame players across the sports world took their first steps into history. Yet it was also ground zero for a progressive culture by which Black America rallied.
By the time Allen Iverson hit campus in 1994, the blue and gray was already iconic. The Hoyas had the first black coach in John Thompson. It had the swatting center in its lineage, Patrick Ewing. Rappers from coast-to-coast sported the Georgetown colors, and there’s always been a strength of brotherhood in the word itself.
Georgetown, baby.
Jewel of Chocolate City. Home of the sway.
Then came Iverson, at a time when the game of basketball needed an infusion of attitude. A pillar of self-expression, who arrived to DC like a movement. Bubba Chuck. The pulse of the playgrounds from Virginia. The kid with the crossover. A dart of a point guard, slippery with the ball and impossible to defend.
The firebrand who embodied the spirit of basketball, whose swagger became a unifying voice. And boy could he ball. Freshman of the Year in 1994-95. A ride to the Sweet 16 as a teenager. An average of 23 points per game over two seasons, a Hoyas record, and a two-time Big East Defensive Player of the Year.
No. 1 pick in the 1996 draft.
