BILL RUSSELL X ROOTS OF FIGHT
LATEST ARRIVALS
About — Bill Russell
“If you can take something to levels that very few people can reach, then what you’re doing is art.”
They called him the “Secretary of Defense” early on, because at 6-foot-10 his defensive presence was formidable. They called him “Mr. 11 Rings” when it was all said and done because he was the most dominant center basketball had ever seen. After 11 championships, Bill Russell had more rings than fingers.
What we call him today is a legend – or The GOAT. A man who broke records on the basketball court and broke down social barriers with an equal passion. For 13 years from 1956-1969, while playing in Boston, Russell stood tall. The records speak for themselves. Twelve All-Star appearances. Five league MVP awards. During one stretch, eight straight titles. A lifetime average of 22.5 rebounds per game, a stat so astonishing that it borders on fiction.
Yet Russell was all too real. From the time he transformed the University of San Francisco into a juggernaut, he was standing up for what is right. He fought for his fellow man. In 1961, he organized a boycott of an exhibition basketball game because two of his Black teammates were discriminated against in a Kentucky restaurant. In 1963, he marched with Martin Luther King Jr for Jobs and Freedom. In ’67, at the Cleveland Summit, Russell was there standing with Muhammad Ali, front and center, backing Ali’s decision to not serve in Vietnam.
Want to talk about making history? Look at #6, who done changed the game. First Black coach in professional sports. Basketball Hall of Fame, both as a coach and a player. Presidential Medal of Freedom. A leader of men. The greatest defensive player of all time. The biggest of all the big men, and an icon of the ages.
We are thrilled to introduce the new Bill Russell x Roots Of Fight collection, paying homage to one of the greatest, most significant athletes of all time!
